Roanoke liquor store proposition fails after recount produces another tie

Special to the Star-Telegram

ROANOKE — Exactly two weeks after the election, the results are finally in: There will be no liquor stores opening in Roanoke.

After a two-day recount, the votes in the election on allowing liquor stores in the city near Texas Motor Speedway were at 789-789.

Although the number of votes has changed, it’s still a tie. That means the proposition fails, City Secretary Kim Barnes said.

The vote was originally counted as 790-790. The city was required to conduct the recount, which began Monday morning. Because the number of votes is different after the recount, the council will have to canvass the results again Monday evening.

A proposition to allow the sale of mixed beverages in restaurants by food and beverage certificate holders passed, Barnes said.
