Northeast Tarrant news briefs: 2 men suspected of burglarizing vehicles
SOUTHLAKE — Two Forest Hill men were arrested Monday, accused of breaking into 13 vehicles after they borrowed a friend’s car at a party and said they were going to a store. Christopher Rivera, 30, and Dustin James, 18, were in the Keller Jail on Wednesday on suspicion of burglary of a motor vehicle. About 2 a.m. Monday, police found an abandoned car with the windows down in the 1000 block of Turnberry Lane. Officers saw electronic equipment and other items in the car. Nearby, police found that vehicles in streets and driveways had been burglarized. All the vehicles were unlocked, police said. In at least one case, burglars went into an unlocked garage and burglarized a vehicle, police said. After searching the neighborhood, police saw two men standing near a house, Southlake police officer Roderick Page said. Police arrested Rivera after a brief pursuit, and James was arrested after hiding in a neighborhood for about five hours. — Domingo Ramirez Jr.
Woman sought in abduction of 5 children
Officials said Wednesday that five children abducted from the Houston area by a woman who took them in after Hurricane Katrina may be in the Dallas area but that they’ve also been seen in Fort Worth. The suspect, Rhonda Tavey, told television station WFAA/Channel 8 in an interview Wednesday in Fort Worth that she had taken the children from their mother for their own safety. The Harris County district attorney’s office charged Tavey, 44, with five counts of kidnapping, and an Amber Alert has been issued. The children, two boys and three girls, range in age from 3 to 8. Tavey is believed to be driving a blue 2004 Chrysler Town and Country minivan with Texas license number 963-PTB.
