Gadgets: Samson H2 Handy Recorder is ideal for desktop use

The Samson H2 Handy Recorder is a portable device with four microphone capsules giving users 360° recording.

The unit is powered by either AC or two AA batteries; recording is done onto SD media cards (512 MB include) up to 4 GB SDHC giving users high capacity options.

The four mics take the inputted audio and bring the signals together for stereo imaging. The recording can be done in different ways producing a 96 kHz/24-bit resolution as a WAV or MP3 file or even record in high-quality stereo.

A clear, backlit display shows recording levels, time code, file name and remaining battery life. Also shown is the front, rear, 2 or 4 modes of the mics being used.

What’s really cool about this recorder is the front and back mics allow for recording from all angles. Along with the included stand, this is an ideal desktop recorder. I also found it simple to use, with one-button recording, playback and pause, fast forward and rewind. When I did get stuck, the included instruction manual helped get me to the next step.

Access to all the controls is simple with the selected action displayed on the screen. A menu button controls most anything you want it to do. Others features include a 1/8" Phone/Line Output to attach speakers or headphones, hookups for playback, power, USB hookup and record controls.

The unit can be set up in various ways for all different kinds of recording, while also being able to use an external mic. Users will find this to be an ideal device for podcasts, interviews, and even electronic news gathering.

Want a laptop that can go with you to the beach and won’t be damaged by salt or salt spray? You might consider the B300 PC notebook from GETAC Inc.

The computer has passed Defense Department standards for salt fog testing on the device’s protective coatings and finishes. These finishes will repel the harmful substances that otherwise can damage the computer.

In a recent emailed news release, Jim Rimay, president of GETAC said: "Salt is one of the most aggressive chemical compounds in the world, and will quickly corrode a computer’s exterior, impair vital electrical system functions through salt deposits and have a physical impact by restricting free movement of its mechanical components. The B300 addresses these issues with its Salt Fog certification and elevates it to an elite status among ruggedized computers for safe and uninterrupted operation in any location, especially in coastal regions of the world."

The computer has the industry’s first 1200 NITS screen along with an optional Night Vision feature. Battery life will be good since it has LED backlight technology.

What you get inside the computer is 512MB DDRII DRAM upgradeable to 4GB, 80/120GB shock-resistant hard drive along with sealed ports and connector cover. All of this is in a watertight unit, contained in a magnesium alloy case, which is vibration and drop-shock resistant.
